HOSPITAL ADDITIONS.

AT PALMERSTON NORTH.

SCHEME OF £50,000,

The new buildings now being erected as additions to the Palmerston North hospital are well advanced, and when completed will make the institution thoroughly up-to-date, and will provide additional accommodation for a large number of patients.

From the present buildings ther« is a long corridor 250 feet in length, and this connects with the additions now being made. On the south side of the corridor is the Martin memorial block, on the front of which is a tablet denoting that it has been erected in memory of the late Dr. A. A. Martin. In this are the X ray room, therapeutic room, two bacteriological laboratories, dark room, doctors' room, and the usual conveniences.

The kitchen block, which is well advanced, comprises on the ground floor a large kitchen, maids' and men's dioing rooms, storerooms, scullery, refrigerating room, and offices, while upstairs there are bedrooms for the male and female servants as well as sitting rooms.

The laundry block which is practically complete, is well away from the main buildings, and consists of office, receiving and delivery rooms, washhpu.se, drying room, fumigating and. disinfecting department, boiler houso, and engine rpom. Two large boilers have been installed, and an underground corridor from the laundry block will carry th e pip e 3 and wires for heating and lighting the whole of the- buildings, electric light being installed throughout. The total cost of the present programme Is about £50,000. The extensions are being so designed that additional wards can be erected as required by making an extension of the corridor and building wards parallel with the new wards now being constructed.
