During the past eig"hty years there had been a. wonderful revival of Gothic architecture, and some magnificent churches, which had been built, showed that the noble art of architecture was by no means extinct. The speaker said that ardhitecture was the expression of ideals of beauty, art, and religion on the part of meai, embodied in concrete and enduring form. It was pointed out that the architects of great cathedrals conceived their- de signs in the spirit of religious devotion, and offered their best as on an altar of sacrifice, They looked upon their craft and skill as finding , its ablest and best expression in tttie carving or tracery in a church or cathedral.
