THE EMPOWERING BILL.
(To the Editor),
Sir—.Under the above heading I notice in your Thursday's issue a letter from an Onerahi resident who, on the occasion of his last effort, stated tljat it was his, parting shot— the most pleasing part of it. It is a fact worthy of note that all those correspondents to your paper opposing the idea of improving the harbour will, within the next • ten years, in all probability through the course of Nature, have reached their allotted span ( and will have passed on to another sphere where harbour by-laws, coal royalties, and perhaps even cold storage don't exist. Yet these men, with but a few year 3 to and with very little to show that any superior wisdom or knowledge they may have possessed dur-
ing their past public career was of much benefit to the district, are passing sleepless nights in thinking out plans to defeat the commendable aims of a younger generation, who are out. to bring about conditions which will enabl e them to shake off the fetters of combines and trusts, and make it possible for their fair district to take its proper place in the world's commerce. What a contrast between, those two letters appearing side by side in your Thursday evening's paper, viz., that 'by A. H. Mason and the other by H. Hawkins. While one attempts to throw dust in the people's eyes th e other succeeds in putting the position clearly and straightforwardlyl With my hat off to Mr Hawkins.—l am, etc.

The Province of Manitoba i 9 bigger than England and Wales, and could by herself grow enough wheat to feed 40,000,000 people.
New Zealand's wonderful bird, the kiwi, comes in for treatment in the children's story this week, and pleasant reading for the young folk is provided. The bird is truly remarkable on account of its many unique features, all of which are dealt with in the story.
