RANTZAU'S PRETENSIONS.
SAAR VALLEY CONCESSIONS
OBTAINABLE BY OBSTINACY
(Received 0.5 a.m.) LONDON. May 2
The "Daily Chronicle's" Geneva correspondent learns from a reliable source that a confidential conference was held in Berlin on Saturday between the Government and the most influential leaders of th e Assembly, when they discussed the situation prior to the peace delegation's departure - i i. xi Rantzau said h e was confident they could secur G vital concessions in the Saar Valley if they refused to sign any terms involving its veiled annexation. . He also stated that th c armistice negotiations with Russia were progressing favourably. A truce was desirable for freeing the Germans to deal with th c Poles. He was opposed to an alliance with Lenin, as that would compromise Germany's future. He preferred to establish good relations with the anti-Bolsheviks by offering more effective support_ than the Entente was prepared to give.— A. and N.Z.
