U-BOAT BARBARITY.

AMERICAN SHIP SUNK

AWFUL DEATH ROLL

NEW YORK, Oct. 11. The American ship Ticonderoga has been torpedoed and sunk in midAtlantic, according to information received at an Atlantic port. A British vessel has landed 20 survivors. It is believed that 230 persons perished. The. survivors state that the Ticonderoga was shelled and torpedoed by a submarine, and that the shelling continued while the crew were attempting to lower the boats and rafts. The ship's guns were quickly silenced by the U-Boat's shells and all but two lifeboats were destroyed. One member of the crew swam alongside the U-Boat and asked the commander to cease firing. The commander pointed a pistol and ordered the man to swim away. After the ship sank the single surviving boat was compelled to throw a line aboard the U-Boat. When the American sailors refused to answer the questions of the U-Boat commander the submarine suddenly submerged, but the lifeboat was saved from being capsized by the tow-line breaking. The submarine is described as having eight-inch guns aboard. The survivors were adrift for four days and many of them were seriously wounded. —A. and N.Z.
