SQUELCHING THE RUMOURMONGER.

The greatest plague in any community is the rumour monger and it L; sincerely to be hoped and trusted that his presence will be immediately removed from this neighbourhood. He has been more than active of late days, with the consequent result that the populace is in a continual tremor of expectancy. Possibly no one suffers the result of a "rumour" so much as the newspaper office. So persistently has the telephone rung to-day to satisfy the enquiries of the dupes of the rumour-monger that the management has decided that henceforth its use will be for business only. That the public may understand what is meant by the Press Association we add these words: The Press Association of New Zealand is an organisation which receives and pays for news from within as well as from abroad. Outside news such as that relating to the war is first received at Wellington and transmitted from there to all the members of the Association, ourselves included. When news of an extraordinary nature comes through special telegrams are transmitted simultaneously to all the members of the Press Association (again ourselves included), and when such messages are received the public may know there is some foundation for whatever the message contains. The people of this district may rely upon us to display in our window all such messages as in our opinon they should know before the issue of the paper. We trust that this intimation will be accepted and the hint about the use of the telephone noted.
