ROULERS' VITAL VALUE.

ROAD AND RAILWAY CENTRE

LILLE AND COAST AFFECTED

(Received 7.45 p.m.)

LONDON, Oct. 1

The Anglo-Belgian advance in Flanders is on a front of 25 miles and has now reached a general depth of five miles, though it is eight miles at the sharpest point.

In two days we have gained twice the ground taken in the Messines and Passchendaele offensives from June to November last year. This suggests some insufficiency of fighting power in the German army.

The advance is a serious thrust £tt the whole system of communication affecting the Belgian coast. . The railway between Roulers and Menin is the main connection between Lille and Ostend and the front is thus now useless for the enemy. Four railways and eight main roads meet at Roulers and the swampy ground makes the building of fresh military roads impossible.—A. and N.Z.
