ONLY ONE ROAD.
THE USKUB FACTOR
(Received 9.5 p.m.)
LONDON, Sept. 27,
General Maurice writes: "Now that the French have occupied Prilep and the Serbians captured the Popadiza ?dountains, which are among the main ' lieights of the Babuna Range and control Veles, the First Bulgarian Army under General Jesof can only retire by one road to Kritchevo, which is completely separated from the rest of" the Bulgarians by the "Karadjitza Mountains. The Bugarians can only retire if the centre group, which :s retiring in disorder before the Serbians, manages to check the advance m the Vardar Valley and covers Uskub. The Serbians-are already considerably nearer Uskub than is Jesof's army, and if the Serbians get there first Jesof s army will be cut off altogether from the railway and will have to find its way through the mountains as best it may. without any prospect of being supplied with food or munitions. We may be certain that the enemy is doing everything to rush up troops under cover of Uskub, which is pregnant with possibilities. The Serbians are able to fight well on rations which would mean starvation to the British, but; they must have ammunition. We must remember that they are already a long way from their railway."—A. and N.Z.
