CLOSE OF A BRILLIANT LIFE

Profound regret was felt throughout Whangarei yesterday as news spread of the tragically sudden death of Dr. H. D. Bedford, M.A., L.L.M., barrister, of Dunedin. The deceased gentleman first made his acquaintance with the Whangarei people by delivering a lecture in the Town Hall on the sth inst. upon the war as affected by the liquor traffic. After speaking in Whangarei Dr. Bedford went further north on a tour of other centres and only returned to Whangarei on Saturday evening, taking up his quarters with the Rev. J. R. Clark. He was in

, v jod health and spirits and expressed his intention of having a dip in "the Pool" in the.morning. The Rev. Clark gave him some bathing attire before going to sleep, so that no one need be disturbed in the early morning. That was the last lie saw of his friend alive. The doctor rose early and went off to the park and was seen to take a "header" into the pool. Shortly afterwards he raised calls for help, but it was not possible to effect a rescue. The body was recovered some two hours later by the police and conveyed to the morgue.
