TRANSPORT SHORTAGE.
CAUSES COMMERCE DECLINE,
AUCKLAND, July 2. The continued shortage of merchant tonnage for both of our inward and outward trade is reflected in the Customs returns, and particularly in those of the past month, which show how seriously the inadequate supply of tonnage is affecting the trade of Dominion ports. During this month the Customs collections for Auckland amounted to £58,059 4s 4d, while for the same month last year the figure was almost double, £90,820 being received. " The decrease io beer duty is not so marked, £2,933 lis 9d, the amount for June 1916, exceeding that of this month by £287 6s id.
The recent prohibition, of the shipping of gold from New Zealand brings the export down to a value of £95 ordinary and £40 free gold. During June of 1916 £65,102 worth of gold left this port.
Of silver, £15,391 worth has left here during the month, while during June of 1916 the larger figure was £20,366.
