The strong inference is that the trouble was .Migendered in the First instance by the well-known Thurburii-McKinloy case, but the confusion of statements concerning Saturday night's melee pre■ludes any positive pronouncement as to how the conflict came about. The parties certainly met in the yard after 10 o'clock, and some form of a free fight ensued, with the upshot that Thomas M>-Kinley received a compound comminuted fracture of the left leg below the knee, and had to be conveyed by motor car to the Whangarei district hospital. Police proceedings naturally followed, and at the Whangarei Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr C. "IT. Chissel', J.l', on the information of '.'(instable G. J. I'aiuc, William Thorburn, farmer, of Kuatangata, was charged that, on the !Mh December, Plili. at Whangarei, lie assaulted one Thomas MeKinley, thereby causing grievous bodily harm. Senior-Sergeant Moore said that the accused had been arrested only a little while ago (tliis morning), and as the assaulted party would fie in hospital for two or -three months, before he could appear at court to give evidence, a remand for the customary eight days was essential. Frequent similar remands would be required until McKinlcy was able to appear. In the event of bail being allowed the accused, the senior-sergeant asked that the amount Fixed should be substantial. On being asked if he desired bail the accused answered in the affirmative. The Bench granted a remand until the I'Mh inst,, and Fixed the bail 'at £100: in self ami one surety of £100. Arrangements for bail were made through accused's solicitor. :
