HEROES OF THE WAR.

PRIVATE STANLEY GOING.

Mr P. S. C. Going, of Maromaku, haa received the following letter from Lieut. Arthur Gray in connection with the death of Mr Going -s second son (Private Stanley Going) who was killed in action in France a couple of months ago. The letter reads: —"Somewhere in France, 9/10/16. Dear Mr Going,— You will have heard before this of the death of your son in action, but I feel it my duty to write to offer my sincere sympathy in your loss and to tell you of the grief of the company at the death of so valuable a soldier and so popular a comrade. We were about to leave our trenches for an advance and assault on the enemy's line when your son, in his eagerness to get for ward, showed above the parapet and was shot through the head by a machine gun bullet, dying immediately. We felt his loss immensely, he was so strong and cheerful, but it seems that the best men are always the first to go I feel proud to have been associated with such a fine fellow, and can only offer you my deepest sympathy in your loss. —Believe me, yours very sincerely, Arthur Gray (Lieut.)"
