He gained captain's rank in 11)03, and commanded the Xew Zealand on her Empire cruise in 1913 He was in charge Of our battle-cruiser , when war broke out, and with her took j part in the battle of Heligoland oil August 28, 1914, and in the big battlecruiser fight off the Dogger Bank on ■ .January 24, 1015, when the Blucher was sunk. He gave up the command of the Xew Zealand when he was promoted to his present rank.
