SELECTION BY LOT.
SECOND BALLOT XEXT WEEK,
OVER TWO THOUSAND XiAMES.
Early next week the second ballot will take place for selection of men from the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve, to serve in the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements. It is somewhat early to be able to state definitely the exact number of names which wiii have to be drawn* but it may be put down roughly tit 2200, as the probable shortage will be 800. That at least 1400 men of the Twenty-fifths will be absolute volunteers shows that the voluntary system is not by any means dead in tha Dominion.
The first week in the new year will see an extraordinary influx of recruits to Trentham. In that week, more than 4000 will be received. The Twenty-fourths are being allowed, '.o remain in their homes over Christmas, and they commence to go into camp about January 3. They will be immediately followed by the Twentyfifths —those who have attested already, and the men to be drawn early next week. Meanwhile, the "Clause 35" men are getting into camp in twos and threes, and they should be all in by the 1 time the Twenty-fourths are mobilised. 'Their advent materially reduces the number of men to be drawn for service by the ballot.
