In order to decrease traffic ou the railways the companies contemplate making a. 50 per cent, increase in the passenger fares, and in some cases the withdrawal of cheap tickets, the abolition of race trains, restaurant and sleeping cars. The Army Council is withdrawing soldiers' week-end leave except to those at the front. The Board of Trade has prohibited the importation of foreign jewellery owing to ."the. foolish buying of well--paid-war workers.
