HIKURANGI TOWN BOARD.

ORDINARY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board was held on Tuesday. Present: Comrs. W. R. Dunn, A. M. Rust, T. Shore, and E. Swanm In the I •absence of the chairman, it presided over the meeting. j Extension of Water Supply.—The manager of the Dominion Portland Cement Company wrote asking what ' arrangements would be necessary to c have a water supply service pipe laid t into their limestone quarry at Waro. It was agreed to refer the matter to \ Comr. Dunn and the water works en- ' gineer to deal with. 1 Water to Bowling Club's Green. — The president of the Hikurangi Bowling Club wrote suggesting that a larger s water main be laid down Park street to ' the club's green. The application was t also supported by Messrs Nelson and T. [ Millington as a deputation, who pointed out the necessity for laying down «i l larger main as the present pipe service '■ was inadequate to supply the Bowling [ > Club's green with water. , After discussion it was resolved that . i two-inch pipe be laid down on the east side of Park street to the club's I green, the club agreeing to contribute i three pounds towards the cost of the works. The clerk was instructed to obtain quotations for supplying of the . material ami arrange for terms of payment. Fencing Water Reserve. —George feasdale reported that Mr Cunningham had not yet completed his portion of a boundary fence betwen his property : and the water works reserves. It was resolved to enquire into the matter and see that the provisions of the Fencing .' rt are complied with. Parliamentary Tour. —The secretary of the North Auckland Development Hoard wrote staling the party would like to partake of a mid-day lunch in Hikurangi when an opportunity could be taken by the visitors to see the Hikurangi swamp. The chairman reported that a public meeting of residents had been held when a committee was appointed to confer with the Board on the matter. Since the public meeting the committee had conferred with "he Board when it was decided to recommend the Board to call another public meeting to further discuss the question of ways ami means for suitably entertaining the Parliamentarians. View Street Deviation. —Mr King, manager of the Whangarei Land Company, waited on the Board, urging it toi improve the west end of View road by* clearing and metalling the road bo- j yoml Shore's Hill. He also suggested that, a deviation be made on the eastern side of the road, which could be carried out at a reasonable cost whilst the Board's contractors were in the district with the road construction plant. On the motion of Comr. Swarm, so-t-ouded by Comr. Shore, it was resolved

that the Board would favourably consider the matter and arrange to confer with Mr Carter on the question of a deviation through part lot 68, and in the meantime, the Board would contribute three pounds towards the cost of clearing the scrub on the existing road, Mr Hill agreeing to see that the works would be carried out to the satisfaction of the Board. Sanitary Service. —Dr. East waited on the Board calling attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the sanitary service now in existence. The sanitary pans in use were absolete and many of them were daniaged which permitted night soil being brought in contact with the public health of the residents. He s-'otigly urged the Board to improve the present system by adopting the double pan service otherwise serious results would follow, which ultimately invoke proceedings being taken by the Public Health Department to compel the Board to provide a maderu system of dealing with the removal and treatment of night soil. Dr. East promised to bring the matter again before the Board in the form of a written communication. Tt was resolved to thank the doctor for placing his views before the Board. When questioned about the condition of the sanitary pans the Board's contractor admitted that n number of the pans were damaged and that householders generally were indifferent as to the class and condition of the pans used. He stated it was very difficult to carry out a satisfactory service under the existing conditions. The Board recommended the Mmtractor to furnish it with a list of those householders who bad fauit-v pans in commission in order that the Board might deal with the matter in terms of the by-laws and the Public Health Act,

Supplementary Loam—lt was resolved on the motion of Comr. Bust to defer consideration of raising a supplementary loan for completing the streets ami roads impro-. emcnt scheme. Railway Excursion Trains. —Un the motion of Comr. Swarm it was agreed fo ask the Railway Department to run excursion trains more promptly to timetable during Whangarei race meetings, as the delay in the return train was often a serious inconvenience to settlers and others who attended the meetings. Building Permit. —The application of the Hikurangi Dairy Company for a building permit was approved on condition that the proposed building was built in accordance with the Board's by-laws. Kr-gineor's Services. —It was resolved M>:C the Board's engineer be asked to mspect the several matters connected with street improvement contracts now in progress and also the carrying out of proposed concrete works in front ■if the Hikurangi Hotel. Dog Registration. —The Dog Registration fees for 1017 were fixed at 2s (3d each for cattle or sheep dogs, and sporting .log-; at live shillings each. Tt was agreed to order a supply of dog collars for the incoming year from the local saddler. Works Supervisor. —The works supervisor's report f»r the past month was submitted- Coinrs.
