THE GREEK CRISIS.

THE GREEK STORY.

AFPE.M, TO UXTTED SPATES

'BITTER FRENCH RESENTMENT

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association WASHINGTON, December 3.

The Greek Government lias issued a Not© to the United States, protesting against the Allies' actions. lc points out that Greece, after extended consideration, decided not to participate in the war, because it was impossible to obtain the necessary guarantee that she would not be doomed to inevitable destruction. \. It was untrue ithat her sympathy lay with either group. Owing, to her geographical situation, she was. forced to submit to occupation of the provinces, the seizure of public services, and also to the abandonment of vessels. For a long time Greece had been unable to import necessaries, but the army, navy, and Government had unanimously rejected, and would continue to reject, Admiral do Fournefs latest demands for ' war material, which forced a serious assault on the sovereign rights of Greece, who felt it her duty to expose the situation to the United States. Greece was confident that she would emerge from the crisis weakened, but intact. If the United States and other neutrals, in a epirit of conciliation, did not save Greece, a grave situation would arise. Therefore Greece asked the United States' support by disapproval of the Allies' action. M. Romanos, Greek Minister to France, stated to-day that he would not be a*ble longer to tolerate the Government's attitude towards the Entente. 'The "Echo dc Paris" says: "In the tragic adventure in Athens the French flag is more concerned than any oths: , . It was on the French uniform especially that King Constantine's troops fired; it is the French reputation which Constantine is about to smirch with ignoble calumnies that, the French cannonaded Athens, the metropolis of civilisation. Let. us defend our honour to avenge our dead." "Le Journal" says: "We arc going to exact reparation ami sanctions for future safety."
