PERSONAL.
Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, G.C.8., who has just assumed his position at Whitehall as First Sea Lord of the Admiralty in succession to Sir Henry Jackson, was bom 57 years ago to-day. He was "appointed to supreme command of the Grand Fleet in August, 1014, wheu the present war broke out. He antered the navy in 1872, winning an £80 prize for gunnery when a- lieutenant. He served in the Egyptian war and on Sir K. Seymour's expedition to relieve the Legations at Pckin. He has previously been Third Sea Lord and Second Sea Lord. Tn the 1913 manoeuvres he commanded the Red Fleet The distinction of G.C.B. was conferred on him in February of last year, and on March "> of the same year he was advanced from the rank of Vice-Admiral to that of Admiral. His work in the North Sea and elsewhere since war broke out is proved too ocnclusively by results to require any eom-j ment.
