There are no details of the battles which are believed to be raging around Bucharest, but it is reported that General Falkenhayn is directly attacking the city from the northwest and" south-east in co-operation wifli General Mackensen. French' opine that if the J Roumanians are- defeated they will jetire to a prepared line from the Sereth to the Arjesh, where the Russians are in strong force. It is reported from Zurich that the civilian population has evacuated Bucharest. (United Service.) The converging German movement greatly endangers Bucharest and a close investment is threatened if General Mackensen crosses the Arjesh river, east of Komana. The sue. cess of the Russians near Kirlibaba may result in the capture of Jaeabein and Dornawatra, enabling them to cross the Carpathians and descend on the Transylvanian Plains through the Syainas Valley, thus helping to reestablish the situation even if the capital is lost. M. Marcel Hutin, the French correspondent, thinks that it will be difficult to avert the fate of Bucharest.
