THE BRINK OF BATTLE
FRENCH TROOPS AT PIEJfEUS,
GREECE AFLAME.
KING RESISTS ALLIED DEMANDS.
Australian and N Z. Cable Association. ; (Press 'Assn.—Reed. 10.40 p.m.) ATHENS, 'December 1. An Allied transport, laden with French troops, has moored at the Piraeus quay. King Constantine has signed a decree accepting army volunteers. ■Greek troops have occupied the surrounding hills and villages. The King yesterday issued congratulations to the officers of the First Army 'Corps on their manly attitude and ordered them to resist by force of arms any Allied attempt; to occupy any buildings of which Greek troops are in possession. 'Bands of reservists in the streets Of Athens considerably alarmed the popualce. It transpired later that they were the barracks, where uniformed and armed Greek authorities appear to be doing their best to maintain order. The calling-up of reservists removes the dangerous element from the streets.
