OHALME-RS SIX SWEEPS BOARDS AT GIANTS' DESPAIR MOUNTAIN. Fred Junk at Wheel of Car When Triumphed at Pike's Peak, Wins Free-For-All for Hollenback Trophy; Chalmers Also Wins Event Six In Mile Race Uμ Mountain Side. Climbing the twenty per cent, grades of Giants' Despair Mountain and negotiating the sharp turns a , lightning speed, Fred Junk in a Cha! mers Six, duplicated his recent success at Pike's Peak, by capturing the Free-For-All event at the WilkesBarre Hill Climb, Saturday, October 7. 'By his victory, Junk brings to the Chalmers .Company the 1000 dollars Hollenback trophy which has been successively won by the English Daimler, Peugeot, Matheson, Stanley Steamer, Chadwick Six, Fiat and Benz cars. The handsome Philadelphia Press trophy for the winner of the Free-For-All was also taken down by the Chalmers Pilot. Junk annexed a third cup when he won Event Nunibei Six on the days programme. The Chalmers Six proved to be tlu fastest car on. the course, and its re cord of 1 minute and 41 seconds foi the climb was approached by no other entrant. Pitted against Junk in tin Free-(For-All were two Mercers, p Stutz, Packard Twin-Six, H.4A..L Twelve, "Pathfinder Twelve and a Maxwell race oar., AU drivers were greatly hampered by the immense crowds on the course. Poor police arrangements allowed the spectators to endanger life and limb recklessly, and the drivers were compelled to shut off power at every turn to avoid a catastrophe. The climb up Giants' Despair Mountain is probably second only to Pike's Peak as a test for motor cars In the 5700 foot course there is a rise of over 690 feet. At. the Devil's EI. bow half.way up the slope, a sharp j-ight-angled turn calls for the utmost skill on the part of the driver and a well-balanced car beneath him. Further up is the famous "S" turn which precedes the long strnight.-away to the finish line. Junk's ability to take these turns fit hish speed was largely responsible for his win. EariW in fhe rl?v Junk drove ? Clialmovs roarlsror mi an event provided for oars stripped of fendersruunins boards and windshields. At the starting line, a snark plus; was blown out, but the plucky Chalmers driver kept on and finished second despite the cripplßfl condition of his car. Junk's v'cto'.y at.
