MENTIS,
(Press Assn. —Reed. 4.5 p.m.) » PARIS, May 6. A communique says: A surprise attack on Friday evening penetrated the German trenches eastward of ' Lunaville road, in the Argonne. We brought in prisoners. The German bombardment with heavy calibre and suffocating .gas shells was continuous and of unprecedented violence during the night westward of the Meuse. We evacuated a portion o<f the trenches on the northern slopes of Hill 304. They were completely wrecked and untenable. Our batteries replied with equal energy, checking the German .. advances. We repulsed with the bayonet German attacks westward and north-westward of the Hill. There is a slow continuous German bombardment against the Mort HommeCumieres line. A fresh German division attacking Hill 304 on Thursday was sustained, causing heavy losses.
