PECULIAR BROWNING FATALITY.

MAN JUMPS OVERBOARD,

James Tobin, a single man, employed on the railway formation works ,at Oakleigh, was drowned early on Sunday morning. He was a labourer, and had been employed by the Public Works Department, at Oakleigh, for some eight or nine months. On Saturday he was in Whangarei, and returned to Mangapai by Nordstrand's launch, which arrived at Oakleigh wlharf about one o'clock on Sunday morning. About three hundred yards from his destination, Tobin was sitting quite quietly in the cabin, when suddenly he ran up on deck and vaulted over the hand rail into th e water. The launch was at once reversed, and stopped as near as possible to the scene of the accident, but when the body was recovered life appeared to be extinct. A doctor was summoned from Whangarei, and artificial respiration tried, but without effect. The deceased has a brother working at Tauranga who has been informed by wire this morning. It is said that deceased received news recently that another brother was killed at th e front, and ' that the news preyed upon his mind. The inquest .has been arranged for today. The body lies at present in the Public Works' goods shed at Oakleigh.
