Dr. Theinhold, of Helensville, slipped on a muddy step last week and broke his ankle.
Sergeant Gordon Johnson left Whangarei to-day prior to departing with the Seventh Reinforcement.
An artistic war honours' board is to be presented to the AVhangarei Bowling Club by Messrs Allan and Walker. The board bears a representation of the Union Jack and the flag of New Zealand, and inscribed are the names of club members who have enlisted for active service. The list as it 'stands at present as as follows:—Capt. Wood, Lieut. McDonald, Dr. Good, Capt. Peacock, H. Kean Clarke, A. L. Dixon, K. Andrews, P. A. Tierney and E. McMahon.
-*• Mr Charles Smith, whose death occurred in Whangarei on 21st inst. arrived in X.Z. many years ago by the ship Resolute, from Glasgow. He settled at Papakura for four years, and when the Thames gold field opened he removed there and followed mining for six years. Then he removed to Kamo, and with his brother, the late George Smith, opened up the Kamo coal mines and lime works, which they carried on for a number of years, eventually selling out, and j settling on the Springs flat. In 18S7 he went to Hikurangi and opened the I coal mines there, which he worked for 15 years. After selling the mines he went to Hawera for a few years, returning to Whangarei and settling in Dent street. He lived a retired life until his death at the age of 73 years.
