THE RUSSIAN REVERSE.
AT DUNAJETZ RIVER,
COST THE ENEMY DEAR
CONFIDENCE RESTORED,
(Press Assn.—Reed. 9.1;" am.) PETROGRAD, .May 11. Military circles state that the Germans brought up eight army corps from Cracow, massing artillery in
overwhelming forces on a precipitous high bank ol' the Dunajetz River which dominated the low country opposite them. The Germans made a costly series of frontal attacks, with reckless disregard of life. After a week they forced the Duuajetz River and dribbled across until they were able to form a new front .on the cast side.
The Russian line has now been straightened and is holding its own, with increasingly frequent counterattacks. The troops are thrilled by the splendid example of Kornilloff's Forty-eighth Division, which was cut off during" the retirement along the Gorlic-Dukla road, but cut its way through by a heroic effort and rejoined its own army corps. Their losses were heavy, but the incident lins restored Russian confidence, which had been severely tried during the retirement. The Russians suffering the reverse were chiefly the victors of Przemysl, not the Grand Duke Nicholas' main force.
The 'Germans must master the lino of the Wisloka defences before they can menace the Grand Duke's strategy on the southern slopes of the Carpathians.
