LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The, Weather (Bureau reports: — The indications ar c for southerly winds, moderate to strong. Weather probably cool and changeable. The night will probably be very cold, with frosts iuland. The barometer has a rising tendency. Tides good. Sea rough. Three old-age pensions and one widow's pension were granted by Mr E. Page, S.M., yesterday at Whangarei. Twenty old-age pensions were renewed.

-* Apparently nothing more is to lie done at present regarding the constitution of a Harbour Board for Bay of Islands, but the matter will not be allowed to lapse. The promoters intend to see it through.

Commencing on Sunday next, the Whangarei Municipal Band wjll devote half the proceeds of their sacred- concerts, held fortnightly, to the local patriotic fund. The money will go to the relief of the dependants of those local volunteers who might fall in the war.

The first wine-makers-' licenses granted in this district were passed by Mr T. Page, S.M., at Whangarei yesterday. Jost Rothenbach, Helena Bay was granted a license to manufacture wine to a quantity not exceeding f>oo gallons. Claud K. W. Harris, Ruatangata, was accorded a similar privilege. Applicants in two cases did not appear and the applications were adjourned.

Judgment for plaintiff by default was given In the following civil case by Mr E. Page, S.M., at Whangarei yesterday:—A. L. Stokes v. Nau Brown, £1 3 (is. An oredr for payment was made in the judgment summons T. Wallace and Co. v.-.T. G. A conference of Native School teachers is to be held at Kawakawa at Hie end of May and will probably last

a week. Messrs \V. W. Bird. M.A., and .'lno. I'orteous, M.A., Inspectors of Native schools, will probably be in attendance anil give addressee. The local members of Parliament have been invited to attend the opening sessions. Several papers are to be given on matters affecting Native school work in particular, and school work in general. Among items that are to come up for discusion is the neml of Observation schools, and the necosity of classes in Practical Agriculture for the teachers.

The cheque was drawn upon defendant jiiul payable to llahiti c< r bearer. Evidence for the defence was to .the effect that defendant paid the cheque to a .Maori on account of

a Maori contractor who was working for defendant. Subsequently defendant discovered that th e Maori had not carried out the work for which payment was made, and, after notifying plaintiff, lie stopped payment of the cheque. Plaintiff stated that he had cashed the cheque for the Maori before he received the intimation not to do so from defendant. The Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff with costs £3 Us. Ho remarked that defendant's remedy was to recover from the Maori.
