THE START.
At 3 o'clock it was quite dark and a start was made shoreward. There was suppressed excitement as to whether the enemy would be surprised or on the alert. At 4 o'clock three battleships abreast had arrived 2500 yards from the shore. The guns were manned and the searchlights placed in readiness. Very slowly the boats In towmoved inshore, edged towards each other, and in that order they reached the beach, four cables apart. The battleships moved slowly in after them until the water became shallow. Every eye was fixed on the GRIM LID OF HILLS iv front with their menacing gloom. Not a sound was heard nor a light seen. It appeared as if the enemy were surprised. In our nervy state stars were often mistaken for lights ashore.' The dawn was rapidly breaking.
