ONERAHI.

One of those queer little accidents that do no harm to anybody happened here on Monday. While a worKmau engaged on the road worKs was leading back a couple of horses after tne mid-day spe*l, a motor car came aown Wilson street at a smart pace. One of the horses, a grey, resented its appearance at that particular time, got up on its hind legs, waved its foro hoofs in the air, by way of protest, danced a sort of paS suel in the middle of the roadway, and somersaulted on to its back in the water-table. The motor was pulled up sharply as soon as the performance commenced, but it was all over in a minute. The horse picked itself out of the 'ditch, snorted a humorous horse-laugh at the car driver and went away quietly to resume its job of. dragging the road machine. There was every chance of the occurrence bringing about an equine tragedy, but happily it ended in laughter for all concerned The funny part of the thing is that the grey horse concerned has more than a nodding acquaintance with motor cars and on ordinary occasions is rather fond of the machines than otherwise.

In spite of war conditions, attendant slackness of ousiuesss generally and a stringent money market, the building trade is pretty busy just now in Onerahi. Mr S. Mason is engaged -on the erection of a three-roomed residential cottage on his section at the corner of Wilson strett and Mackenzie avenue, Mr Watson is building on Mr J. Culbert's allotment further up Wilson street, while Mr W. Holmes, it is said, contemplates the erection, in the near future, of two villa residences on his leased education reserve to meet the growing demand for house room. '

The formation of the footpaths along the length of Church street is well under way. The work of actual formation is finished as.far as the English church when, crossing the roadway, it will be carried to the intersection of Mackenzie - avenue along the right' hand side of the street. -There is a slight delay, at present, in the matter of obtaining scoria for the necessary metalling, the Railway Department, who control the output, having no labour available to work the quarry. It is to.be hoped the difficulty will be' quickly got over and the metalling completed before the absolute break-up of the fine weather.
