Eye-witnesses from Galicia 'describe the Austrians as being in extraordinary confusion and disorder. Entire detachments were foodless for days, and there is wholesale pillage, while residents are shot on the slightest prefext. One officer committed suicide after writing to his wife: "I (am going mad. lam unable to fulfil such orders, and would rather commit suicide than be a .murderer."'
