KARA NEWS.
(Own Correspondent). ,On Monday'night, last the election. ■ of the new school committee took place. Unprecedented interest was taken in the election this year because the school committee has now two schools under its control, namely, Kara and Kokopa schools Both sections were extremely anxious ; to have a majority vote in the committee, hence the school v/as filled to overflowing, many looking on. through the windows and the door. When the chairman (Mr H. Cleary)
of the outgoing committee opened the business of the evening it was ing existed between the two parties. It became Mr Cleary's duty to point out that, although several householders present sent their children to the schools in question, they could not vote at the election because they lived outside the district boundaries. Mr Moses McKinley especially soundly rated—and not without cause, I think—the Education Board for such "preposterous regulations." When mcst of the grievances had been aired the chairman read the reports of the last year. These reports' showed that, in spite of bein;j hampared by a, stingy allowance, the committee had managed to maintain the school in an efficient manner. Mr H. Edmonds was then elected chairman of the householders' meeting and Messrs H. I.ewen and H. E. Kruger scrutineers for the ballot. . The following were the nominations for the five vacancies:—Messrs 11. Matthews, N. Alach, 11. Dent, H. Baker, P. Kokich, P. Atwccd, G. Reynolds, A. Bray, I-i. Edmonds, and Moses McKinley. Of these Messrs A. Bray, H. Edmonds, K. Baker, G. Reynolds and P. Atwood were elected.
The meeting then concluded with, a few well-chosen words of appreciation of the good work done by the outgo-
ing committee
Having provided for their children in getting a school in their district, the Kokopu resdents are now anxious to provide for themselves some amusement during the winter months ahead. Tenders for a hall are about to be called, thanks to the good offices of Mr N. Alach. A schodl and a hall are always pleasant signs of the prosperity of a district and show that the district lacks no "push."
We are experiencing very cold nights, although the days are yet warm; but as yet the young crops have not been damaged by frost.
