THE MONTESSORI METHOD.
The greatest developments of recent times in the teaching of young children are associated with "~ ; the name of Dr Montessori, an Italian lady, who has>devoted herself to this . branch of work. Her schools in Rome have attracted world-wide attention, and her methods of instructing the child mind'have been copied in many countries. The matte r .has not been . overlooked* in Canterbury, for in hisannual I'eport to the Education Board the principal of the Training College
stated that, in order to provide facilities for the practical japplication of the' Montessori method, he had been authorised ' early in the year to, obtain the necessary apparatus. At that time the .material required could not be obtained in Australasia, but the difficulty was met by members of the board's building staff, who constructed the required apparatus on designs submitted by the kindergarten mistress. ; During the year a small class had been conducted regularly on Montes:ori principles, in order to supply students with a practical exposition of the working of the system.
