LONDON, Oct. 5
Three lads ambushed Jones, an escaped prisoner, near Ruthin prison. Jones was much emaciated after five days' privation, but attacked the lads with a pair of shears, and refusing to surrender was shot in the legs. He died in twenty minutes.
The prisons report shows that nearly ten thousand fewer prisoners
were sentenced than in the preceding year, and a hundred thousand fewer were tried. JOHANESBURG, Oct. 5. The Trades Federation has agreed not to insist on their representative attending the conference of mine owners, thereby removing the final obstacles to a conference for settlement of difficulties. BERLIN, Oct. 5. The Portuguese Government has protested against ex-King Manuel's wife taking title of the Queen. ST. PETERSBURG, Oct. 5. Thieves robbed a house at Wercheudinsk in trans-Baikalia of £10,000. The police made a house-to-house search until they discovered the gang of robbers, who, firing, killed three and wounded two of the police. ATHENS, Oct. 5. The impending betrothal of Princess Elizabeth of Roumania to the Crown Prince of Greece is denied.
