ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
AUCKLAND DEFEATS WHANGAREI.
The Auckland Junior Association football team arrived in Whangarei on Saturday morning, and played the Whangarei team in the afternoon. The visitors succeeded in defeating the home team by 5 goals to 1. Whangarei won the toss, and elected to play up hill with, the wind in their favour. For tlie first ten minutes play was fairly even, but shortly after it was evident that the visitors were much the "better team. After a quarter of an hour's play a rush by Auckland ended in Caradus passing to Churchill, to Lockwood, to Mutton. The latter scored, and five minutes later repeated the performance. Give and take play ensued for a few minutes, but lack of combination on the part of the home team contributed largely to their failure to find the goal. The forward line were particularly weak in this respect, as they were inclined to crowd too much instead of holding their positions. Jjist before half-time Churchill, playing centre forward for the visitors, headed the ball to the Whangarei goal-keeper, who fumbled it and allowed Yardley and Mutton to rush in and score. The spell ended — Auckland 3, Whangarei nil.
The second spell was practically a repetition of the first, Auckland scoring two more goals through the efforts of Lockwood and Churchill. A few minutes before the whistle sounded Orme scored for Whangarei, the game ending—Auckland 5, Whangarei 1. In the local team Barton, left fullback, was exceptionally good, and also Ball,, centre-half. The local team have a number of good individual players, but are sadly lacking in combination, but with practice should make a good team.
The visitors are a splendid team, their head work being exceptionally good. Caradus gave a splendid display at half-back, feeding his forwards in fine style. Latta, Lockwood, and Mutton were undoubtedly the outstanding forwards, and were always there when wanted.
The last goal, scored by Churchill, was really the feature of the game and was the result ol a concerted effort by the front rank of the Auckland team. Churchill nut in a well directed shot from fifteen yards out which gave the local no possible chance.
