FRIENDLY SOCIETIES AND THE STATE.
With a view to bringing under the notice of the Government the effects of State competition, through the National Endowment Fund, with friendly societies, Messrs J. Shaldiick, District Chief Ranger, and R. Darlow, District Secretary for Auckland of the Foresters' Lodge are visiting Wellington. It is contended that the scheme is taking away from the societies the young people on which they rely, and some members of friendly societies have actually withdrawn and joined the National Fund. The societies, therefore, are of opinion that the Government should subsidise them, the. same as is done in New South Wales, and where members are sick for a longer period than provided for -by the rules they should be helped the society. If friendly societies received the same State aid as the endowment, they say, no objection would be raised.
