During the progress of a case in which a resident was charged with being found drunk in a railway carriage, heard at Eketahuna, one of the presiding justices asked a witness, a railway guard, if it was not an offence on the part of the officials to permit a drunken man to board a train. The guard admitted it was, but stated it was almost impossible under existing conditions to avert it. "Men by the dozen," he said, "get into the Masterton train at Carterton in a state of intoxication, and they cannot be prevented, as they always hold a return ticket, and their condition is not detected until the train has started. The same thing happens at Pahiatua. Their condition is not seen by the stationmaster, as he does not issue them tickets."
