HOCKEY TOURNAMENT.

LADIES' PROVINCIAL. TEAMS IN COMPETITION.

AUCKLAND, Sept. 8

The first round of the tournament for the provincial ladies' hockey cup was played at Remuera on Saturday afternoon, the three matches resulting in wins for the Auckland senior and junior teams and for Paeroa.

The game between PaeToa and Whangarei was very even in the first speli, Whangarei having the advantage of the slope. Miss Crane scored a goal for Whangarei, and Miss Acclymont a goal for Paeroa. In the second half Paeroa pressed their opponents hard, but missed a number of chances to score; Shortly before time the ball went into the Whangarei net from a scramble, giving Paeroa the game. Whangarei played more consistent hockey than Paeroa, but their forwards.did not show to such, advantage individually. The game ended —Paeroa -2, Whangarei 1. Mr . C. E. Walker refereed. dp Auckland seniors beat Hamilton by 3 goals to 2. Misses Booth, Bond and Hardley scored for Auckland, and Misses Lovell .and A. Ranstead for Hamilton. Hamilton had the advantage in the first half, Auckland in the second. Mr R. H. Paron was referee. Thames were beaten by Auckland juniors by 4 goals to 0. Mises T. and D. Mamblin and Miss Daldy { each, scored a goal for the winners, and one of the Thamaa backs accidentally aded another goal to the Auckland score. Thames played one short. Mr R. H. Kilip was referee. The tournament ends next Thursday.
