ONERAHI NOTES.

(Froui Our Own Correspondent.)

The ball, given by the ladies ol' the Onerahi Croquet Club on Thursday, oth inst., must unhesitatingly be declared the success of the season. Weather conditions were ideal. There was a bright clear moon and at 8.3 0, when the strains of the Grand March rang out, there was already a large attendance of guests. The number was continually added to by late arrivals by road and launch, till the hall was comfortably filled. The interior of the hall was very artistically decorated. The deep green of nikau-palm and fern-frond tastefully picked out with white arum lilies and sprigs of peach blossom gave a charming effect. The ships in port had been laid under contribution and strings of signal-bunting festooned across the hall added the required touch of vivid colour. From its in-

ception, except for necessary intervals, dancing was kept up with vigour and zest and it was well after midnight ere the ball was allowed to flag. Supper was served at 11 p.m. and 2 o'clock had struck ere, with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" a a very enjoyable entertainment was brought to a close.

The ball was made the occasion of a presentation, by way of souvenir to Mrs Carson, a retiring member of the club, who is leaving the districts The presentation, on behalf of the club members to a departing comrade, consisted of two valuable pictures and was made by Mr H. H. Hewlett, of Mangapai, who accompanied the gift with a graceful, well-delivered speech, to which the recipient made suitable response.

A meeting of the Onerahi Domain Board was held on Tuesday last, at the residence of Mr M. P. Handforth,. secretary and chairman of the board.l After viewing and passing the word already done, future financial pros/ pects were discussed. The position, briefly, is this: The expense for work already done, preparing, levelling, etc., has, so far, fallen entire *y upon the members of the board themselves and a further sum of £ 100 is needed to complete. In order to avoid the delay of another season, it is imperative that the ground be at once fenced, drained and put in grass. It was decided that the secretary be instructed to communicate simultaneously with the Premier and Mr Mander pointing out the urgency of the case and urging the immediate allocation of a grant under the Public Domains Act for this purpose.
