LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

I YESTERDAY'S SITTING. ARBITRATION AND CONCILIATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. The Legislative Council met. at 2.30 p.m. The Hon. H. D. Bell (Leader of the Council) moved that the Council does not insist on the amendments made* in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, explaining that the amendments made gave the measure a wider effect than contemplated. The Hon. J. E. Jenkinson contended that the amendments should be insisted on, and that managers should be appointed to confer with managers from the House on the points of difference. The Hon. J. Barr and the Hon. J. T. Paul argued that the amendments made by the Council enlarged the scope of conciliation, and should therefore be insisted upon. The Hons. W. Earnshaw, O. Samuel and C. M. Luke contended that by giving an industrial agreement the force of an award an injustice might be inflicted upon persons who were not parties to the agreement. The Minister's motion was carried by 1G to 13. The Methodist Union Bill was committed, and clause 10 struck out. on the motion of the Minister. The Hon. H. D. Bell moved the second reading of the Pensions Bill, explaining the new features and proposed alterations in the existing law. The debate was adjourned. The Council then adjourned.
