An instance of how the American manufacturers create facilities for marketing their goods as compared with the British manufacturers' methods was given by Mr H. D. Osland at the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce the other evening. A friend had once asked him to assist in sampling a case of a new brand of American bottled beer, and on opening it they had found a couple of glasses and a corkscrew in the cose. He had opened more than one case of British beer before, but never had he found the aforesaid facilities for marketing the goods so convenient as in the American instance. Holders of timber lands for milling purpose in Waimarino County nave petitioned Parliament that the existing law whereby standing timber is reckoned in assessing the unimproved value of land may be so altered as to give relief against owners of standing timber having to pay rates on such timber. Petitioners state that in many cases owners of standing timber, after having paid rates on it for years, have had their timber destroyed or rendered useless by bush fires. Owing to the limited area of timber land now remaining, the rating of standing timber is acting prejudicially to the best interests of the Dominion.
