RACING IN ENGLAND.

Racing in England is a much more exclusive sport than it is in Australia, a circumstance responsible for considerable comment by visitors from the Commonwealth. One Of those who drew comparisons recently aired his views in an English sporting paper, and was promptly taken to task by the London "Referee" in the following comments: —"The simple truth is that in the colonies racing is primarily a show, whereas in England sport is the governing consideration. English owners produce their horses to beat other horses, to win races, and not, in the first place, to exhibit them in the spirit of a circus proprietor. Visitors to our courses' know what they have to expect, and if they like to pa; their money to see it, are very welcome, the ipublic support being always, needless to say, an important consideration from every point of view. Hut, whatever may be the case in Australia, it is not true here that the general public entirely keeps the thing going. There are a great many races in England for prizes wholly made up of the contributions of owrcrs without a shilling from any other source."
