YESTERDAY'S SITTING
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The Pensions Bill was read a first time. A committee of 3 2 was set up to confer with a similar committee from the House of Representatives to consider the report of the Registrar of •Friendly Societies, and inquire into (the position of Friendly Societies and their relations to the State in the matter of social insurance. The Council went into Committee on the Magistrate's Court Amendnvnt Bill. The Hon. J. T. Paul moved an amendment which the Minister explained would allow a junior clerk of the Magistrate's Court to be eligible fora position for which, the Minister argued, he was not qualified. It was quite against the intention of the Bill, which aimed at elevating the status of Magistrates and increasing their salaries. He explained that it was proposed to give every magistrate extended jurisdiction. • The amendment was rejected on he voices, and the Bill was reported ■with verbal amendments, and read a third time. The Council adjourned at 4.1 0 p.m.
