Patrick Molloy (27), a cab washer, who was said to have escaped from Colney Hatch Asylum, was indicted before Mr Justice Ridley at the Old Bailey last month for the murder of Caroline Mary Ann Pike, a schoolgirl, at Walworth The child was found dead in prisoner's bed, with her throat cut, and later the accused was discovered in a fit in New'ington causeway. He admitted having taken spirits of lemon, and an emetic was administered. In the opinion of Dr Samuel James Gilfillau, medical superintendent of the Colney Hatch Asylum, prisoner from August, 1909, to the time of his escape on February 16th, 1913, was a congenial imbecile, and in committing the crime he was actuated by Kin uncontrollable impulse "He had the idea that he had murdered a woman in the Borough at one time," the doctor said.
"That was the Tabard street murder," counsel suggested. "He gave himself up to the police for that," continued the doctor, "but it was entirely a delusion. He imagines he sees the girl he killed." Another medical witness said the man had three itmes attempted to take his own life.
Prisoner was found guilty, but insane, and was ordered to be detained during His Majesty's pleasure. The jury expressed the view that the period during which an escaped lunatic may be recaptured should be lengthened.
