SYDNEY SLUMS

DREADFUL STATE OF AFFAIRS.

SEVEN FAMILIES IN ONE HOUSE. ADULT AND JUVENILE IMMORALITY. SYDNEY, Aug. 28. The report of Professor Irvine on the question of housing workers was tabled in the Assembly yesterday. It contains damning evidence of overcrowding, with its resultant unhealthy conditions, at Waterloo, Surrey Hills, Redfern, and other portions of the city. The report mentions one house occupied by seven families, several having only one room where all household duties were performed. Children in crowded areas were driven to frequent the streets which, though healthier than being crowded in the houses, subjected them to the corrupt influences of street life.

Referring to badly lighted lanes, the report says juvenile and adult immoralities are said to be practised with little or no check.
