The Marsden Licensing Committee, presided over by Mr. F. V. Frazer, S M., will meet on Tuesday next at noon in the Whangarei Court House. A transfer of the license of the Kamo Hotel from Mr. A. J. J. Meyer to Mr. Fernand Felix will be applied for.

At the County Council meeting this morning the engineer reported that he and the Public Works Department's inspector had decided on a route for the road from Onerahi station to the top of the hill. The owners through whose property the route passes have objected, and if the Government does not make a grant sufficient to cover compensation it will be Impossible to carry out the work.

Cabinet at its next meeting will consider the entertainment of the officers and crew of H.M.S. New Zealand, also the question of the carriage of country people to ports during the visit (according to a Press' Association message from Ohristchurch). 'Mr Massey says an impression that the New Zealand will visit Lyttelton first is incorrect. Wellington will be the first port of call.

The Patea correspondent of the Wanganui "Chronicle" writes: "When the Turakina steamed out of Wellington on her last Homeward voyage, she had on board 14,000 odd casss of cheese, representing a value of £56,----000 Of this shipment 10,600 crates were the product of South Taranaki, so that this valuable cargo has been lost as a result of the fire. The loss of cheese from this district by reason of the fire is estimated at £ 42,400. The consignment was insured."

The monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court will be heard! next Tuesday. The presiding magistrate will be Mr. F. V. Frazer. Thirty-nine undefended civil cases will be heard, six defended cases, and seven judgment summons cases. The Borough Council employees made a start this morning with ploughing up the triangle, after which lawn grasses will be sown.

It is reported that the barque Marjorie Craig will complete loading sawn timber at Onerahi to-morrow afternoon. Her cargo will consist of half a million feet of kahikatea.

Mr. Joe Sloane secured six first prizes at the Towai Show yesterday with his chestnut mare Kotiro. The mare has secured prizes in every show Ting in which she has competed.

The Waipu Railway League has decided to wait on the Minister for Public Works with a view to having the construction of a light railway 2ine to deep water in Whangarei Harbour put in hand as soon as possible.

Mr. Hugo had a good attendance at ilis third lecture last evening in the School of Music. The deliniations of ■characters, as usual, created much amusement. The next lecture, the last, will be on Monday evening—upon *• Noses."

In the course of a few weeks Messrs. D. Goldie and Sons will have another sawmill in operation on Mr. C. Grant's property at Tutukaka. The mill will be capable of cutting 40,000 to 45,000 feet of timber per week. There will be four years' timber cutting in the immediate vicinity of the mill.

At this afternoon's meeting of th<? County Council Cr. Morey moved, and Cr. Finlayson seconded, that councillors be allowed to smoke during the meetings. The chairman said he could not allow the motion, as notice of motion was required. Cr. Morey then gave notice to so move at next meeting of the council. Several members remarked that this was the only local body known to them where smoking at the meetings was prohibited.

A resolution which had an elemenY of humour was drafted by Crs. Morey and Finlayson for adoption at the County Council meeting this afternoon, but was eventually destroyed without coming before the meeting. The .e----solution was as follows: —"That as the Auditor-General has tagged the expenditure of county funds in entertaining the Governor and Prime Minister, the guests be circularised •pointing out to them the facts and telling them that, in the event of their assisting the council, the councillors will make up the balance required."

Passengers on the excursion train 1 from Towai Show yesterday evening witnessed an exciting race between Towai and Hukerenui. Two Maori boys, mounted on ponies, left Towai station at the same time as the train, and started off at full gallop along the road. At Akerama station they were well ahead of the train. Near the old Hukerenui racecourse the train drew level, and appeared to have the race well in hand, but on the locomotive slowing down when approaching the station, one of the boys, riding a splendid finish, snatched victory by a short head. The distance by rail is four miles, and by road about four and a-half to five miles up hill and down dale. The time occupied to cover the distance was exactly a quarter of an hour. When the uoy arrived at. the Hukerenui station his pony was wet with perspiration, but not * greatly distressed.
