TYPHOID FEVER PREVALENT.
Typhoid fever is prevalent in Auckland, but not to the same extent as in outlying parts of the province, such as the Bay of Islands, Ohinemuri, and Thames. The wards at the Auckland Hospital (says the "Star") contain 26 patients, but it is reassuring to note that no cases have so far proved fatal. Nine have been admitted since the beginning of the month. Without doubt the protracted dry weather of the past two or three months has been such as to induce cases of enteric. Worst of all, perhaps, is the time when showery weather follows upon a season of drought. It is not usual for typhoid cases to occur in such numbers so late in the season. The Chief Health. Officer (Dr Makgill) is now visiting some of the affected country areas, particularly in parts where the disease has broken out among the Maoris. During last month 61 cases occurred in the whcle of the Auckland district, while for the first 11 days of the present month the number of cases reported was 31. At the Bay of Islands seven fresh cases have broken out since the first of the month. The sufferers there are members of Maori settlements on the eastern shores of Lake Omapere. With the cessation of the dry spell it is hoped that the fever outbreaks will diminish both in the city and in the country. Reports from the country indicate that the provincial hospitals are also being called upon to deal with numerous cases of typhoid.
