THE JUDGE'S REMARKS.

ON WHANGAREI SOL.O PERFORMANCES

The judge, Lieut. Herd, made the following notes in regard to the performances of Whangarei bandsmen in the solo selection competitions:— E. FLAT SOPRANO SOLO. Maximum points 50. "Bravo, Bravo, Don Pasquale." A Leatherby, Whangarei Municipal. Tempo di valse allegro .moderate c brillante. Very flat at opening, in fact very much out cf tune; not sure of his notes in bar 8; trill and rail very fairly managed; bar 31 wrongly phrased; tone not sufficiently bright; accents at 38 and 39 i.ot sufficiently marked; tiill at 36 ami 37 very niealy done; split top G at bar 54; at 71 very indistinct here; omitted bar 85, T.iis performance has been much marred owing to the player not having tuned his instrument properly. (3« points"). E. FLAT EUPHONIUM. Maximum points 50. "Blow, Blow, thou Winter Wind." A. E. Fulljaaies, Whanga.-ei Municipal.—Opens with nice tone playing -with fair style: intonation a shade ft ulty at bar 7; pui lento well managed; did not give minim its full, value as. bar 16; F's at bar 25 not strictly in tune; playing very nicely nevertheless, and with nice expression; 35 to 41 very well played indeed; F at 50 I a shade out of tune; ad lib at 59 well managed; phrasing very nicely at tue risoluto, also i« observing marks of expression properly; ad lib at 73 splendidly rendered; quite Uie correct i style here; D. at 89 slightly out of I tune; another very good performance, (43 points). BARITONE COMPETITION. ; Maximum points 50. I Solo "Non c Ver." P. Keen, Whangarei.—lndistinct articulation at bars 1 and 2; cadenza very fairly managea; con tenerezna out of tune at 9; split G bar 11; a little hard iv quality; Dolcess well" played; bar 20 wrongly read; quavers at 23 and 24 too short; ma.lorately well played; piu mosso. stentn.ndo not properly observed; cadenza very fairly played: Tempo Imo. cadenza, turn too hurried; would be an improve ment to play this a little slower; solo J tenerezza. faltered on Cs at bar 6; dolcess 11 to IS well managed; articulation indistinct at 16; very fairly played; piu mosso, steutando at fi evidently not understood: same remark I applies to the con abbaudona; oa.'lenza very well played a niiu'.Ci.a'.e , ly good performance. (44 points). E FLAT BASS SOLO. "Heav'n in Prayer, Tiiiie 'lid I tpel'.," and "Good subjects of lirabant, 'Us well!" (From Lohengrin). Maximum points 50. E. A. Parr, Whangarei.—Andante Maestoso. Opens with fair tone though a little hard in quality; intonation fairly correct; from 1 to 30 very fairly played indeed;' Molto Sos: mark o: expression properly observed; very

nicely played; Allegro Brillante. Bar * minim made too short; B sharp at 28 slightly out of tune; Ds at 38 and 38 a little out ot tune; on the whole a very fair performance. (44 points).

H. Calkin, Whangarei. Maestoso. Opens with nice tone though rather tamely; intonation a little faulty at 8; at 18 crochet too short; same remark applies to 23 and 29; Playing with very nice lone; very fairly played; Molto Sos: not sufficiently sustained here: PP well man ag;ed; 52 and on not sufficiently sustained, at 56 erters into the spirit of the subject; still lacks in sustainingpower ; tone very nice here; marks of expression properly observed; very fairly played; Allegro Brillante. Should be played a little more boldly; a very nice performance (46 points). In the B Flat Cornet Solo Competitions: — G. H. Flower (Whangarei Municipal) was accompanied by Mr Strong, end entered mta his rendition spiritedly. He was, however, out of tune sev e?al times and doubtless lost points oi< that account. This pi ay or appeared to owe his misfortune to nervousness. J. W. Dobson (Whangarei Municipal) gave evidence of faulty articulation, and slipped several important notes from which he did not recover easily.
