MAY QUEEN MINE TRAGEDY.
MEN OVERPOWERED BY GAS,
TWO LIVES LOST.
OTHERS SERIOUSLY AFFECTED
THAMES, Jan. 12
An inrush of gas occurred in the May Queen mine yesterday, resulting in the death by suffocation of two men, while two other men had to be conveyed to the Thames hospital for treatment. The party working in the stopes above No. 6 level had an awful scramble for life when the alarm was given that the gas was in No. 6 level, and) a desperate struggle ensued. James Williams was overcome by the gas and fell in the level. He was dead when afterwards found, while Thomas Guy, who was alive when brought to the surface, died shortly after. He was also overcome by the gas and fell in the level. Two men, Crawley and Adams, are in the hospital suffering from poisonous gas, while Vercoe, James, Mulcahy, and Herival are all more or less affected, though not seriously.
