SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY.

Kensington Park was at its best for the opening of the Whangarei Racing Club's summer meeting to-day. Perfect weather, a large attendance, and fine sport were also favorable accompaniments. In the absence of bookmakers the totalisator was kept going at a merry pace by the speculators. The Municipal Brass Band discoursed fine harmony, ?.nd everything appeared to indicate that the meeting would be a prosperous one for the promoters. The results to hand at the time of the '"Advocate" going to press were as follow:— Settlers' Handicap. — Viet^^ (O'Shea) 1, Bonny (Curran, Gibs overweight) 2, Madam Paul (Deeley) 3. Also ran: Luperine, Nimrod, Luros, Rangiora, Tutanekai, and Waitangi. A keen finish. Won by half a head, with a length between second and third. Time: 3.19. Madam Paul was favorite. Kensington Stakes.—Tipua (McKinnon) 1, Viva (O'Shea) 2, Mahinga vCurran) 3. Another close fiuish, the winner getting home by onsy" s a neck. Time: 50 4-5. Mahinga was a warm favorite. Soultstone and Agram were the only other starters. First Hurdles. —Black Northern 1, Sabine 2, Burnbrae 3. The only starters. Sabine led most of the way with Black Northern, well in hand, following. The winner came through at the distance, and won in a canter by six lengths. Time: 2.48 1-5 First Trot Handicap.—Smuggler 1 Fiery Cross 2, Lady Member 3 Scr* Miss Ethel. In the straight Lady Member was leading, but broke Ai spoiled her chance of victory. *
