A SATURDAY ROUND-UP.
AND THE CONSEQUENCES,
Five men were brought before Messrs H. W. Briggs and W. Chadwiu, J.'sP., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, to answer various charges resultant upon their having imbibed too freely on Saturday evening.
Richard Schooler pleaded guilty to being drunk ( and disorderly at the Town Wharf, prior to the leaving of the boat on Saturday evening.
Constable Paine said that defendant on the arrival of the police was standing up to his waist in water trying to climb up the prow of the boat, and his conduuct was generally disorderly.
Schooler, as he was a first offender, was let off with a fine of 10s, in default 48 hours.
James Crawford pleaded guilty to a charge of using obsence language on the Grahamtown boat, late on Saturday night. Sergeant Moore pointed out that there had been numerous complaints lately concerning the conduct of persons travelling by that boat, which might end in it being impossible for ladies to travel by it. The Bench, after delivering a lengthy warning, fined Crawford £1 or in default 4 days.
Jack Kahe was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Bank-street, and with stealing two glasses from the Whangarei Hotel and, after an adjournment until an interpreter was forthcoming, pleaded guilty to both charges.
Defendant was fined 10s on each charge, with an option cf 48 hours in each case.
Lev/is Told, who was in company v/ith Jack Kaho al?o pleaded guilty to r. charge of being drunk and disorderly and was fined 10s or 48 hours.
Tom Richmond, another Maori, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly at Patterson's jetty as the Limestone boat was leaving. He paid a fine of 10s.
