MELBOURNE, Feb. 18,

The fourth test match was resumed to-day in pleasant weather on a perfect Avicket. The Australians continue ed their first innings with eight Avickets down for 317 runs.

Hordern carried his not-cut score of 1. to 7, Carter was dismissed for 5, and the innings closed for 328.

The South Africans started disastrously, five of their wickets falling for the miserable total of 38, and the sixth Avicket going at 70.

Nourse, who had contributed 20 of this number by steady batting, was joined by Sherwell, and a solid partnership Avas established. The batsmen carried the score to 156, when Pherwell skied a ball from Whitty to mid-on. and was caught by Matthews. The latter was fielding substitute for Hordern, whose tAVo bowling fingers had been dislocated. The eighth wicket fell at 171, and the ninth and tinth at 205. Nourse, who carried his bat, had played stolidly and effectively, and was heartily cheered. The batting Avas generally disappointing on the perfect wicket. AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
